Henri Victor Lesur (French, 1863-1900) oil on panel genre painting that depicts an aristocratic gentleman who wears a tricorn hat and powdered wig and holds a pair of spectacles as he reads a public bulletin. In the background at left a couple walks toward a building on the opposite side of a square. Signed “V. Henry Lesur,” lower right. With partial Swain’s Art Store, Plainfield, NJ label affixed to verso. Housed in a giltwood frame. Sight: 11 11/16 in. H x 8 7/8 in. W. Board: 12 3/16 in. H x 9 3/8 in. W. Framed: 15 3/4 in. H x 13 in. W.
PROVENANCE: Private Knoxville Collection.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. With minor frame abrasions with retouching along extreme upper and lower edges, extending into the tails of the L and R in Lesur. See U/V photography. Not examined out of frame.
