Oil on canvas painting depicting Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun (France, 1755-1842), likely inspired by the artist’s 1790 “St. Luca” self-portrait in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, and/or 1800 self-portrait in The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg. Shown in bust-length, three-quarters view, Vigee Le Brun wears a gold and white headpiece around her head and neck, black dress, and red sash around her waist. Unsigned. Housed in a modern ebonized and giltwood frame. Sight: 26 in. H x 21 1/2 in. W. Framed: 31 3/4 in. H x 27 1/2 in. W. Likely late 19th or early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of George Bradley, Lewisburg, TN.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Canvas has been lined. With scattered retouch primarily to background, especially to lower left corner, and to a few areas in hair and body, largest to curl that extends upward into headgear from center of head, 3/4 inch x 1/4 inch, and to chest, 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch. See UV photography. Frame with minor abrasions and filt losses.
