Arnold Meerman (German, 1829-1908), oil on canvas landscape painting depicting a bucolic European homestead. Women hang laundry outside a farmhouse under the shade of a large tree, while children play with ducks at the edge of a body of water in the foreground. Another woman works outside a nearby barn, and hills rise in the distance. Signed “Meerman / Munchen” lower right. Canvas: 24 1/4 in. H x 38 in. W. Frame: 28 1/2 in. H x 42 1/2 in. W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Lyman O. “Buzz” Heidtke, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: Professionally restored by Cumberland Art Conservation Center in 2001. A copy of the treatment record accompanies this painting. Treatment included, but was not limited to, cleaning, a new stretcher, lining, and inpainting. The giltwood molded frame has several small spots of wear and narrow losses to the gilding.
