Large oil on canvas portrait, late 18th or early 19th century, of Jacob van Loon, after Rembrandt van Rijn''s (Dutch,1606-1669) iconic painting De Staalmeesters (The Sampling Officials), also called Syndics of the Drapers'' Guild, 1662, in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. The present painting depicts a single figure from Rembrandt''s composition, Jacob van Loon, seated with head turned toward the viewer. Unsigned. Housed in a painted wood frame. Canvas: 57" H x 29 1/2" W. Frame: 63 1/2" H x 36 1/4" W.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville area collection, obtained about 20 years ago from an estate sale in Belle Meade.
CONDITION: Canvas has been relined, likely in early 20th century or earlier. Repaired 7" x 3" tear without loss to center right, in background. UV light inspection shows scattered retouching, repairs, and inpainting throughout, largest areas of inpainting 8" x 1/4," lower right, and 1 1/4" x 1/2," upper left. Craquelure throughout. Frame with abrasions and losses.
