Karl Kaufmann, also known as F. Gilbert (Austrian, 1843-circa 1905), two oil on board paintings depicting European waterside settings, including Venice and a city with boats docked beside a tall Cathedral. Signed “F. Gilbert” and “Gilbert” respectively in the lower right corners. Housed in matching antique giltwood and composition frames with raised floral moldings and name plaques. Sights: 9 3/4 in. H x 7 1/2 in. W. Frames: 18 in. H x 15 1/2 in. W. Note: Karl Kaufmann was an Austrian painter who used many aliases including “F. Gilbert.” He studied at the Viennese Academy of Art and frequently traveled to places such as Italy and Istanbul. He is known for his paintings of architecture and landscapes.
PROVENANCE: Private Chattanooga area collection.
CONDITION: Both paintings with grime, small splatter stains, and craquelure. Venice scene has fading to signature and wear at perimeter. Venice scene also has a 1 inch area of loss to floral molding on frame. Both frames with scattered wear, small losses and regilding.
