Hamilton Hamilton (Connecticut/California, 1847-1926) impressionist oil on canvas painting depicting a young woman in a long white dress standing before a trellis covered in blooming roses. The trellis grows up the column of a house with a window visible behind the column. Signed “Hamilton Hamilton NA” lower right. Label en verso for Berry Hill Galleries, with title listed as “Young Woman Standing Before a Trellis of Flowers” and approximate date of 1890-1895. Giltwood frame with Neoclassical-style fluted, egg and dart and beaded moldings, and carved corner ornaments. Sight: 23 1/2 in H x 13 1/2 in W. Frame: 28 1/2 in H x 18 1/2 in W.
PROVENANCE: Ex-Spencer Hays, Nashville, TN, by descent to his daughter.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Craquelure throughout with stretcher marks. UV light inspection suggests scattered minor retouch spots to subject’s hair, cheek and to background. Frame has some wear and small losses.
