Lot 1139: Painting of a St. Bernard, poss. John P. Benson

Oil on canvas portrait of a St. Bernard dog, depicted in three quarter view against an indistinct gradient background, wearing a leather collar with metal tag. Signed “J. Benson” lower left and dated 1897 or 1879. Possibly John Prentiss Benson (American/Massachusetts, 1865-1947). Molded giltwood frame. Stretcher: 20 in. H x 16 in. W. Frame: 26 1/2 in. H x 22 1/2 in. W. 

PROVENANCE: The estate of Eleanor Jacobs, Nashville, TN.

CONDITION: Lined. Area of paint abrasion to lower section of painting and along right edge, possibly from previous framing. A few small chips to frame edges up to 1/2 in.
