Large James Webb (British, 1825-1895) oil on canvas maritime painting of a crowd of fisherfolk on a long pier, 1876. Two women sit by a red net in the lower left foreground and several small boats float near the pier. On the distant horizon are a larger sailing vessel and steamship. Two birds fly in the sky while a third dives into the sea at lower right. Signed and dated lower right. Housed in a giltwood frame. Sight: 39" H x 49" W. Framed: 53" H x 63" W.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Jon E. Jones, Cookeville, TN.
CONDITION: Oveall very good condition. Canvas has been relined. With minor areas of retouching to sky, 1 1/2" x 3/4" and 1" x 1/2," and scattered areas of possible retouching to structure at far end of pier and surrounding area, largest 1 1/4" x 1 1/4." Minor frame abrasion with retouching. See U/V photography. Frame with abrasions and losses.
