Spanish Colonial Cuzco School oil on canvas painting depicting St. Joseph and the Christ Child. Both wearing gilt foliate decorated robes with halos around their heads. Joseph holds the Christ Child in his left hand and has a lily in his right hand while the Christ Child places a wreath of lilies on St. Joseph''s head, all within a red painted foliate border. Housed in a simple painted wood frame with a beveled velvet mat, bearing label for Paul Arlt Frames, Washington, DC. Owner''s label en verso for Mrs. Homer B. Millard. Sight: 21 1/2" H x 19 1/8" W. Framed: 28 3/4" H x 26 1/4" W.
PROVENANCE: Private Memphis Collection, by descent from Mary Millard, the first wife of Lt. Col. Homer Behne Millard, Jr. Note: Oregon native Homer Millard founded the prestigious Millard Preparatory School for West Point which operated from 1925 – 1948 in Washington, D. C. and later in Millard School in Langlois, Oregon. Lt. Col. Millard also served as Executive Officer to the Secretary General of the War Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany from 1946-1947.
CONDITION: Canvas has been laid on board. Areas of exfoliation and losses to paint, most noticeable in the upper half of the painting, including horizontal creases with paint loss.
