Margaret E. Sturgis, (American/Maine, 1915-1991) oil on canvas titled “Big Top Back Door” depicting performers including a woman on horseback and an acrobat in the doorway of the tent, likely that of the Ringling Circus in Sarasota, Florida. A terrier dog rests in the foreground next to a red ladder and horses and a red wagon appear in the background, outside of the tent. Signed lower left, “Sturgis,” and housed in the original whitewashed wood frame with white wood liner. Sight: 23 3/4 in H x 28 1/2 in W. Framed: 32 1/4 in H x 38 3/8 in W.
PROVENANCE: Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts Foundation.
CONDITION: Painting overall very good condition. Frame overall good condition with minor wear and some tape reside and minute accretions to the back of the upper frame.
