16th-century or earlier tempera and gold leaf illuminated vellum or parchment manuscript leaf cutting embellished with depiction of the Nativity and a floral scrolled border. With historiated initial “R” and musical notation, likely from an antiphonary or gradual. Matted and framed under glass in a simple giltwood frame. Sight: 12 in H x 8 in W. Frame: 18 in H x 14 in W.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Dr. James and Susan O’Neill, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition, leaf has been trimmed around initial. Some creasing and small scattered losses to paint and gilding, mostly along crease lines, but colors remain vibrant. One edge of the vellum has come out from under the mat. Not examined out of frame.
