Francesco Raffaello Santoro (Italian, 1844-1927) oil on canvas genre scene painting titled The Village Schoolmaster, depicting a man seated with open book instructing three young male students with a raised hand and pointed fingers. The setting is a humble, brick-floored interior room; one student appears engaged while a second appears to have cast his book to the floor sullenly and a third stands at an open doorway as if waiting for the second student to leave. Signed lower right; labels en verso with title and artist’s name. Carved giltwood Rococo style frame with plaque bearing artist’s name. Sight: 17 in H x 21 1/2 in W. Frame: 23 1/2 in H x 27 in W.
PROVENANCE: Private Southeast Tennessee collection, ex-DuMouchelles Auction, 2017.
CONDITION: Scattered craquelure and small areas of retouch to canvas. Frame has been regilt, with some scattered minor areas of loss and repair.
