Items 1-2: Two (2) Utagawa Yoshimune II (Japan, 1863-1941) AKA Arai Yoshimune woodblock prints, “The Loyal Hatchet” and “Evening Snow at Sano” from the series “Thirty-six Selected Tales of Snow,” 1892. Both housed under plexiglass in ebonized wood frames with cream mats. Both with Kanda’s Gallery B.O.Q., Tokyo, labels affixed to backing. Both sights: 13 1/2 in. H x 9 1/4 in. W. Both frames: 18 1/2 in. H x 13 1/16 in. W. Items 3-4: Two (2) Utagawa Kunisada (Japan, 1786-1865) woodblock prints from a triptych of Kabuki actor portraits. Both housed under plexiglass in bamboo frames with charcoal mats and both from the collection of Henry Horton (1866-1934), Governor of Tennessee from 1927-33. Both sights: 13 1/2 in. H x 9 1/4 in. W. Both frames: 19 1/2 in. H x 14 13/16 in. W.
PROVENANCE: Items 1-2: Kanda’s Gallery B.O.Q., Tokyo, Private Nashville collection. Items 3-4: Collection of former Tennessee Governor Henry Hollis Horton; Private Nashville collection.
CONDITION: Items 1-2 in overall very good condition, with fresh colors and strong contrasts. Items 3-4 with scattered, minor areas of soiling especially to item 4. Item 4 with minor tears without loss, or with negligible loss, especially to lower quarter outside of image. Not examined outside of frames.
