19th century American School oil on canvas mountain landscape. The background with a sunset or sunrise reflecting on the left side of a large mountain. The middle ground depicts a flat plain interspersed with regions of trees and fields. The foreground with a body of water to the left and cattle along the shoreline and rocks with a large tree extending over the water to the lower margin. A homestead depicted in the distance along a treeline with windows lit and smoke rising from the chimney. Unsigned. Housed in a wooden ogee frame with shallow foliate carving on the outer edge. Sight 17 1/4″ H X 29″ W. Frame: 26 1/2″ H X 38″ W.
CONDITION: Painting has been lined with crackelure throughout (stable). UV shows fluorescence around the base of the two large rocks in the foreground and the treeline area to the right of the homestead but closer examination does not indicate inpainting/restoration to these areas and may indicate the use or lack of a varnish application.
