Helen La France (Kentucky, 1919-2020) oil on canvas (laid on board) country landscape depicting an active tornado bearing down on a rural farm community. A man driving a horse-drawn cart on a dirt road in the foreground tries to outrun the twister, while figures to the left seek cover in an underground earthen dugout. A barn sits momentarily untouched in the right foreground, while debris whirls toward it in the sky, and the tornado's path of destruction is visible in the background. Signed lower right. Housed in black painted wood frame. Sight: 17 5/8" H x 31 3/8" W. Framed: 18 3/4" H x 32 3/4" W. Biography: "Self-taught African American artist Helen LaFrance was born on a Kentucky farm and began painting in her 40s. She is known for her "memory paintings" drawn from her recollections of life growing up in the rural South. Several museums and private collectors, including Oprah Winfrey, own examples of her work." (Source: "Helen LaFrance Folk Art Memories" by Kathy Moses). Helen LaFrance died November 22, 2020 in a Mayfield, Kentucky nursing home at the age of 101.

Steinway and Sons, New York, Model M Grand piano, mahogany case over tapered legs terminating into block feet and mounted with castors. Serial #439088 indicating a manufacture date of 1974. 38" H x 57 3/4" W x 5'7" (67") D.

CONDITION: Significant sun fading to wood to lower half of top (the portion exposed when hinged top is open), fading to the underside of the lid and some sun fading to the left side. Soundboard and pinblock in good working order. The top of one sharps and flats key is missing. A sharp Zero string with very minor buzzing, action dampers with minor clicking. Fortunino Matania (Italy/United Kingdom, 1881-1963) oil on canvas religious painting, possibly an illustration piece, titled "Sermon on the Mount," depicting Jesus Christ preaching on the Mountain of Beatitudes to a crowd. Housed in a contemporary giltwood frame with painted sight edge. Signed "F. Mantania" lower right. Sight: 23 3/8" H x 29 1/2" W. Framed: 29 1/4" H x 35 1/8" W. Biography: Fortunio Matania was born in 1881 in Naples, Italy. He is primarily known for his depictions of scenes from Antiquity, many of which were illustrations for the British women's magazine "Brittania and Eve," and for his work as a war artist during the First World War. Provenance: Acquired from Solomon and Whitehead, Ltd., London, in 1979.

George III English Chinoiserie enameled long case clock by Thomas Butterfield. The clock has an eight-day, two-train striking movement and is contained in a lacquered teal green and gilt case decorated with Chinoiserie figural landscape decoration. The domed pediment is fitted with gilt balled finials. The arched dial has a silver-applied chapter ring with gilt foliate corner spandrels. The matted center of the dial contains an aperture to view the day of the month and a Seconds dial. Maker’s signature and address engraved on a plaque at the top. 98" H x 19 1/2" W x 10" D. Last quarter 18th century. Note: Thomas Butterfield is recorded in the book Britain's Old Clocks And Watches (1954) as the maker of a similar Parliament Clock, circa 1790, which also is contained in a Japanned case.

PROVENANCE: The Estate of Pia Stratton, Nashville, Tennessee.

CONDITION: The clock case is in very good condition with age-related separation cracks to the wood panels, some abrasions and losses, and some restoration to the paint decoration, visible under UV light inspection. The movement has been previously restored, all parts present, functionality not checked or guaranteed. Later paint decoration on the clock, probably early 20th century. [See more photos →]

Milanese Renaissance style ebony cupboard, possibly made by Jackson and Graham of London, mid to late 19th century, with profuse inlay decoration; constructed in three sections. Removable Cornice features a double domed pediment, each pediment topped with a classical bracketed plinth and inlaid with mask and classical figures, above an upper shelved section with two doors, flanked and divided by fully turned columns with carved and inlaid capitals, and inlaid with portraits of a young man and young woman (suggesting this cabinet may have been made as a wedding gift). Lower, stepped cupboard section has a molded edge over a frieze with panoramic, silhouetted scenes of putti in landscapes, over two inlaid doors inlaid with circular putti scenes, flanked by inlaid pilasters, atop a plinth base with square ogee molded feet. Heavily inlaid throughout with bone and ivory veneers including foliate and geometric patterns, angels, urns, winged lions, griffins, and other classical motifs. 91 1/2" H x 51 1/2" W x 19 3/4" D. Milanese or English, circa 1870. Note: the underside of the top section retains a Railway Express Agency shipping label dated 1958 (or 1938) showing the piece was shipped from Washington, DC to Chattanooga, Tennessee. A copy of a portion of a 1993 appraisal, dating this piece to the Victorian era with possible attribution to Jackson & Graham, is available to winning bidder.

PROVENANCE: Property of a Tennessee Religious Institution, acquired 1958 from Old Antique House, 817 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, DC. Copies of accession documentation available to the winning bidder.

Alexander's Fayetteville Tenn When I get empty take me back"; and one (1) white slip glazed jug with cobalt stencil reading "FROM PITT & BAGGETT, SPRINGFIELD, TENN. NOTHING NEW BUT THE JUG." English Adams style painted satinwood cabinet or diminutive sideboard, the center section having a serpentine form with single top drawer with brass escutcheons over a two-door cabinet with landscape vignettes with classical female figures flanked on each side by a concave panel with vignette of vases with bouquets. This cabinet is decorated with classical medallions, birds, and draped garlands and is supported on tapered legs with spade feet. 38" H x 48" W x 28" D. Second half of the 19th century.

Chinoiserie decorated Dutch Linen Press with red lacquer and gilt enamel decoration depicting Chinese figures engaging in various activities in landscape settings. Two-part construction. Top section with Rocaille-carved serpentine pediment and three (3) plinths for displaying vases, over two wide inset ogee paneled doors which open to reveal a fitted interior with linen shelves and drawers. Bombe-shaped lower section contains two short drawers over two long drawers, curved blocked feet and a valanced skirt. Back of case with old label partially reading ARTHUR PIERRE – J. & A. PIERRE ANVERS ANTWERPEN. 98" H x 72" W x 26" D. 19th century.

CONDITION: Overall good condition with minor wear commensurate with age, the red Chinoiserie paint decoration appears to be a later addition. The locks and pulls are not original to the piece and there has been repair to the mortise and tenon joinery as well as the frame and runners to re-strengthen the top, interior, and lower sections. Pair (2) of George III style Edwardian painted satinwood armchairs after the English Cabinet maker, George Seddon, featuring inset caned backs with painted center medallions depicting cupids, double inset caned arm, and caned seats. The satinwood chair frames are painted in the neoclassical style with floral sprays and green floral accents and are supported on delicately turned legs with casters. 38" H x 26" W x 21" D. 13.5" H of seat (frame, not cushion). 19th century.

North Italian or South German Baroque tabernacle form walnut desk or bureau bookcase. The upper section features a center cabinet with a scenic inlaid door depicting a castle scene flanked on each side with locking drawers with scenic landscape scenes. The drawers are paneled in the Pietra Dura and Pietra Paesina technique with Dendritic Limestone tablets. The interior of the cabinet contains two drawers and is lined with French Toile wallpaper. The lower case contains two candle slides over a hinged slant front writing surface inset with felt. The interior of the desk is fitted with drawers and slides, which when open reveal a hidden compartment. The desk sits over a bureau that contains two tiers of half drawers and two full-length drawers and rests on bun feet. The secretary is inlaid with exotic woods and each drawer and cabinet has a locking escutcheon. 72 1/2" H x 40" W x 22" D. Late 18th/early 19th century.

Block front top over a conforming case, with a "hidden" frieze drawer, crossbanded with outline inlay and fitted in green baize with cutlery divisions, and flanked by one deep, compartmentalized drawer to one side and one cupboard drawer to the other, both also fitted in green baize, and with decorative keyhole escutcheons and brass pulls. Biography: Alvin (Al) Lee Allen Jr. was raised in Memphis; after graduation from Central High School in 1944, he served in the Navy during World War II, using his artistic skills in the top-secret Terrain Model Workshop. In 1946, Allen enrolled in Louisiana State University (LSU). Among his teachers were O. Louis Guglielmi and Ralston Crawford. Completing his undergraduate studies in 1950, Allen returned to Memphis to teach at Treadwell High School. Meanwhile, he pursued an MA degree at LSU. The next year, he joined the faculty of Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. In 1968, Allen was invited to chair and develop the art department at the University of Arkansas Little Rock. In 1985, he was given the title of Professor and University Artist-in-Residence. Allen's works are in a number of collections belonging to museums, colleges and universities, and private individuals, including the Arkansas Arts Center, the High Museum (Atlanta), and the Joslin Art Museum (Omaha). UALR has several works in its permanent collection. Both former U.S. senators Dale Bumpers and David Pryor displayed Allen's works in their Washington DC offices, and during Bill Clinton's presidency, two of Allen's works were hung in the White House. Note: the first annual Mid-South Exhibition was held at the Brooks in 1956, a tradition that continued for the next 17 years and included purchase prizes to help bring regional art into the collection. Biography: "Born into a privileged class of Russian Society, David Burliuk became a central figure in the history of the Russian avant-garde movement as an accomplished poet, art critic, and exhibition organizer. He studied at the Kazan School of Fine Arts in 1898, then in Odessa, Moscow, Munich, and in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, however, as a breaker of artistic tradition, he found himself expelled from the Moscow Institute in 1911. His early works were Fauve-like and were exhibited with the Blue Riders in Munich. With the advent of World War I, he left Russia and traveled for four years. Consisting of a slant front top that opens to a fitted interior with two dovetailed drawers overhanging one dovetailed drawer flanked by lopers and tall turned Sheraton legs and feet. One interior drawer signed "Miss Mary McNeely/Handleyton,Tenn/Moses Byrum". 38 1/4" H x 35 1/4" W x 19 3/4" D. Circa 1840/1850. Note: This desk was exhibited at the 1971 MADE IN TENNESSEE arts exhibition held at the Tennessee Fine Arts Center at Cheekwood, located in Nashville, TN. It is also featured in the exhibition catalog of the same name on page 16, figure 9. Genealogy: Moses Byram (1798-1880) was listed in the Roberson County census of 1850 as a farmer, aged 52 years, with an estate valued at $4000. An inventory taken at the time of his death in 1880 included a turning lathe, workbench and screws, and various wagon wheel parts.

Drum form clock surmounted by a cherub and flanked by satyr figures playing musical instruments, all on a shaped base with bird finials and ball feet. Porcelain clock face with Roman numeral markers and marked for English retailer Phillips Bros. & Son, 23 Cockspur Street London 2000. Works numbered 1042. 11" H x 11 1/2" W x 5 1/2" D. Together with a pair of matching figural satyr single garniture candlesticks with incised numbers to base underside. 10 3/8" H. Late 19th century.

Two (2) Oliver Clare (United Kingdom, 1853-1927) oil still life paintings of fruit. 1st item: Oil on canvas painting depicting bunches of fruit, including peaches, plums, and a strawberry, situated on the ground in a naturalistic setting. Signed "Oliver Clare" lower right. Housed in a pierced Rococo-style giltwood frame. Sight: 6 1/2" H x 9 1/2" W. 2nd item: Oil on board painting depicting bunches of grapes and plums situated on the ground in a naturalistic setting. Signed "Oliver Clare" lower right. Housed in a Rococo-style giltwood frame. Sight: 6 4/8" H x 8 3/4" W. Framed: 13 3/4" H x 16" W. Note: Oliver Clare was born in Birmingham, England, the son artist George Clare and brother of Vincent Clare. The Clare family specialized in still life and flower paintings, and some of George Clare's work was also used for advertising through postcards and posters. His paintings were exhibited through the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, the Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Academy in London.
