Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) bronze warrior figural lamp holder or candlestick, depicting a man, likely a "foreigner" in armor, kneeling with the drip pan balanced on his head. Fine detailing to the subject's protective arm and leg coverings. Mounted on a stepped bracket base. Overall: 10 5/8" H. Base: 3 1/4" W x 3 1/8" D. Note: A similar pair of candlesticks is in the collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The catalog entry notes: "During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), foreigners were occasionally depicted in the decorative arts. They were typically shown with curling hair, bushy brows over bulging eyes, large noses, and moustaches like those shown here. They wear Chinese style robes with raised chest medallions, aprons, and boots. Paired candlesticks typically flanked incense burners on most types of altar tables during the Ming and Ch'ing dynasties (1368-1911)."

Korean iron censer or incense burner with silver wire inlaid Chinese "Shou" auspicious character marks to the rounded hexagonal sides and fret designs throughout; the pierced cover having a crane finial symbolizing longevity; two hinged handles. Raised on a recessed plinth supported by six bracket feet. 7 5/8" H x 5 5/8" dia. Likely from the Western province of Pyongan, early 19th century. Note: Purchased in 1956 from Samuel W. Lee & Co. Seoul, Korea. The original Lee receipt stating it may have originally come from a high ranking Korean official or Princess Yun and letter from original donor about its acquisition are available to the winning bidder.

Chinese jade tripodal archaistic form censer or incense burner, celadon with lavender inclusions. Consisting of a three-part lid in the form of a pagoda with pierced, lotus-carved finial, a hexagonal roof with hanging bells, and a foliate pierced gallery. The round body features a key fret hexagonal rim and is decorated with high relief carved vignettes of foo dogs and horses, flanked by two pierced elephant mask handles and resting on foo lion mask knees and paw feet, articulated rings throughout. Raised on a fitted and pierced hardwood stand. 11" H x 7" W x approx. 4 5/8" D. Overall with stand: 12 1/2" H. 20th century.

Chinese porcelain and hardwood screen, five panels inset with a total of eleven enameled porcelain plaques comprising five painted landscape scenes above five detailed scenes of birds, ducks and flowers, and the center panel with additional dragon plaque. Each panel features carved wood accents above and below the plaques and fits into a carved hardwood footed base with canted ends. At least two of the plaques have inscriptions, possibly signatures, en verso. Chinese, 19th century. Overall – 26"H x 26"W x 6"D. Note: included with this lot is a 1984 appraisal from Manheim Galleries, New Orleans, attributing this screen to the Tao Kuang period (1821-1850) with a value of $6,500.

Marked with apocryphal Wan Li or Ta Ming Wan Li nien chih character mark to underside. 9 1/4" H x 15 1/8" W x 8 1/8" D. Late 19th/early 20th century.

Attributed to Nam Cheong (Chinese, active 1840-1870), pair of oval Chinese Export harbor scenes with ships and figures, including one depicting the nine story pagoda at Whampoa Reach. Unsigned. Unframed. Canvas: 20 1/2" H x 15 1/2" W. Note: Namcheong, also spelled Nam Cheong, was a painter who likely had a studio in Whampoa. He was frequently commissioned to create ship and port scenes by Western clients. Many of his canvases share the same oval format and compositional interplay of light on water; the 9-tiered pagoda at Whampoa Reach was frequently illustrated in his paintings. (Ref. Carl L. Crossman, "The China Trade," Princeton: The Pyne Press, 1972, p. 67-71).

CONDITION: Both paintings are in need of conservation and new stretchers. Both exhibit alligatoring and buckling throughout, delamination at edges, yellowing to varnish layer. Depicts multiple figures in a landscape setting engaging in various activities including two figures in a boat, two males carrying sticks and a hoe, two young boys with a cow or bull, and two men counting or playing a board game visible through an opening in an architectural space, with a mountain and forest landscape in the background. Chinese inscription in the upper center. The whole rendered in calligraphic brushstrokes. Possible signature in Chinese characters to scroll handle. Mounted to an extremely long beige silk brocade with laid paper backing. Image: 67"L (5 ft 7 in) x 14 1/4" W. Overall: 18 feet long x 16 1/2" W. Metric measurements: Image – 170 cm x 36 cm. Overall – 548 cm x 42 cm. 19th century or earlier.

PROVENANCE: The collection of the late Fount and Ida Smothers, Thompson's Station, Tennessee, acquired when they visited China as part of a US-sponsored cultural exchange delegation of architects in the early 1970s.

Fujinuma Noboru (b. 1945, designated Japanese Living National Treasure 2012), open weave bamboo sculpture in flower basket or Ikebana form titled "Spring Tide". Signed with Japanese character to underside. Retains original box and receipt from Tai Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2008. Basket – 13" diameter by 10"H. Box – 12"h x 14 5/8" W. Biography: "Fujinuma Noboru, from Tochigi Prefecture, studied with Yagisawa Keizo (1927-2006) and consequently became a member of the Iizuka family lineage. He began his career in engineering and photography before discovering his true metier was bamboo. After his immersion in European artistic traditions while traveling in Paris in 1974, Fujinuma felt compelled to learn more about his own culture and the traditional arts of Japan. Inspired by the works of Shono Shounsai, he began by making simple bamboo objects. Later, he worked as an independent bamboo artist, consulting with such well-known masters as Iizuka Shokansai." (Source: the Metropolitan Museum of Art). Fujinuma was designated as a Holder of Important Intangible Property (Living National Treasure) in 2012 by the Japanese government for his bamboo craft (chiku kogei) technique. Four (4) Asian-style porcelain vases wired as table lamps. 1st item: Square form vase in the Imari palette with foliate and foo lion designs throughout having foo lion mask handles mounted on a hardwood base with slipper feet and wired with brass components. 12 3/8" H. Overall: 19 3/8" H x 6 3/4" dia. 2nd item: Rouleau form with iron red foliate forms throughout, including peonies and lotus flowers, having pairs of foo dog handles to each side mounted on a simple hardwood base and wired with brass components. 13 7/8" H x 6 1/4" W x 4 5/8" D. Overall: 20 3/8" H. 20th century. 3rd & 4th items: Pair of two (2) Asian Imari style bottle form vases with squared bodies and foliate design throughout, wired as table lamps with newer brass components, mounted on a square hardwood stand, and raised on an ebonized plinth base. Vases: 12" H x 4 1/2" square. Overall: 18 3/8" H x 4 3/4" square. 20th century.

Three (3) Chinese Wucai Gu form vases having qilong dragon vignettes to each side, surrounded by polychrome floral enameled decoration, and base with birds upon flowering branches. Two of the vases are wired as table lamps with brass components mounted on pierced hardwood stands. Wan Li character mark visible to underside of unwired vase; obscured by stands on wired vases. Vases: 9 1/4" H x 4 5/8" dia. Overall as lamps: 15 3/8" H x 4 3/4" dia. 20th century.
