Pair (2) of Chinese Famille Verte palette porcelain floor vases, baluster form with galleried rims. The wide-lipped rims with interior enameled foliate decoration and an exterior jagged leaf-tip border, the neck with long reserved panels of figures within gardens at various pursuits, the body with a variety of shaped reserved panels with figural, landscape, and architectural images, all separated by a diapered grisaille foliate design and resting on a slightly flared feet with pendant leaf tip decoration, the shoulder reserves with gilt trim. 35 1/2" H x approx. 15" W. 19th century or earlier.

PROVENANCE: A Knoxville, Tennessee collection.

CONDITION: One vase with old restoration to the rim, with some paint exfoliation noted to the rim. Scattered wear to enameled decoration commensurate with age. No other repairs noted under UV light inspection. [See more photos →]

Each bowl of Qianlong form with flared rim and low foot, overglaze-decorated with 3 female figures in a boat and pagoda, landscape and fungi decoration on a background of sgraffito waves in white enamel. Turquoise glaze and Ch'ien Lung seal mark to underside. 6 1/2" diameter by 3 1/4"H. Chinese, late Qing or early Republic Period. Includes later carved wooden stands, 1 1/2"H. Note: Consignor's mother acquired the bowls in the 1920s from a neighbor who had served as a missionary to China.

Character mark inscribed in red to underside. 8 3/8" dia. 2nd-3rd items: Two (2) baluster form vases with vignettes of an interior domestic scene and a scene of monks bidding each other farewell to either side having raised gilt accents and patterning throughout. Raised on later added pierced hardwood stands.9 3/4" H x approx. 5 1/2" dia. 4th item: Charger with central well depicting samurai warriors in a village setting with figures emerging from a home in the background, bordered by patterned rim having raised gilt highlights throughout. Southeast Asian Tibetan Buddhist Thangka painting depicting The Perfect Wheel of Life imagery, the Bhavachakra or Samsara, conveying a symbolic representation of cyclic existence, with themes of karma, rebirth, life, death, and suffering in a journey towards enlightenment or Nirvana. The inner wheel is divided into segments with figural imagery depicting the spheres of existence and rebirth, and the outer wheel depicts the "Causes of dependent origination". The wheel is held by Yama, the Lord of Death deity, with two (2) bodhisattvas in the upper corners against a landscape background. Rendered with bright polychrome pigments and gilt details on a silk or cotton fabric. Housed in a contemporary giltwood bamboo decorated frame with a gold brocade mat under glass. Sight: 25" H x 18" W.. Framed: 30 1/2" H x 23 1/4" W. Late 19th/ Early 20th century.

Both with one circular red seal lower left corner and both are framed with silk brocade borders and housed in ebonized wood frames. Likely from part of a Four Seasons grouping by the same artist. The floral painting with applied wood scroll box lid with Japanese writing. Flower scroll: Sight – 45" H x 17" W, Framed – 64 1/4" H x 23 3/4" W. Tree scroll: Sight – 45 1/2" H x 17" W. Large-scale Chinese polychrome painted paper and canvas 6-panel floor screen. The front, paper on wood, features finely detailed scenes with court figures engaging in various activities; mountains and other buildings visible in the background, and a river, bridge and fence in the foreground, all within a Chinese foliate design border. The back features stylized, framed cloud decorations on a brown ground, paper mounted onto canvas. 102 1/4" H x 132 total W. Each panel measures 22" W. 19th century.

PROVENANCE: Private Nashville collection, acquired about 40 years ago.

Tall round form with inset rouge marble top, reeded edge, and a carved and pierced foliate frieze depicting foxes eating grapes. The top rests upon a birdcage support over a reeded and acanthus carved pedestal, supported on three acanthus carved cabriole legs with figural dog head knees and paw feet. 34 1/2" H x 49" dia.

Both items with remnants of red wax export seal to plinth bases. 5th item: Buddha figure seated upon a lotus base with hands in Manidhara or Anjali Mudra. CONDITION: 1st-12th items: All items with scattered minor losses to glaze, largest area measuring 1 3/4" x 1/4". All items with craquelure throughout, surface grime, and minor surface wear commensurate with age. Scattered sticker residue to all pieces. 1st-2nd items: Minor scattered hairlines to glaze, largest measuring approximately 3" L. Chinese 4-Panel folding Coromandel screen, each panel with applied colored hardstone decorations. Asian beauties engaged in various activities in an outdoor setting adorn the upper section while vignettes featuring pairs of hardstone rabbits decorate the lower section, all enclosed in mother of pearl and inlaid hardstone foliate borders and dividers, with gilt highlights throughout and to the reverse of each panel. Raised on square feet with brass caps. 72" H x 64" W (16" W each panel). Early 20th century.
