Large Sand Mountain, Alabama decorated churn, attributed to E. E. McPherson of Sand Mountain, bands of sine wave incising around upper shoulder and midsection of the jar. Incised in script, “1896” denoting the date, and a “5” on both sides of the jar, denoting the gallon capacity. Alkaline glaze with two pulled handles on one side and a lug handle on the other side. Excellent condition. 19 1/2″ height. Note – two similar churn forms are illustrated in “Pottery from the Mountains of Alabama” exhibition catalog, The Bessemer Hall of History, October 5th, 1986, page 16, checklist number 22 and 23.
