Outstanding carved New York Classical period mahogany veneered sleigh bed. Head and footboards topped by curved rounded rails with deep acanthus carved ends, terminating in clusters of fruit above the finely veneered convex rails. Curved and legs, deeply carved in the form of cornucopias full of fruit, terminating in hairy paw feet. 43 1/2"h x 60"w x 104"d. New York, c. 1825. Provenance: Estate of A. Welling LaGrone Jr., Nashville, Tenn. Purchased from Charles & Rebecca Clark, Woodbury, CT; Published, Art & Antiques, January/February 1999 article on LaGrone home. Includes a custom mattress (51" x 77"), box springs and custom bedcover. Condition: Overall excellent condition. Small chips, small veneer patch to the upper left headboard. French polished.
