George Washington Hood (New Jersey, 1869-1949) oil on panel painting titled "The Buccaneer" depicting an 18th century pirate with a stern expression seated atop a chest in a rocky beach landscape, likely a painted illustration for a book. Signed "George Hood" lower right. Fragments of old brown paper backing with Boston City Club label reading "This picture presented to the Club by J.B. Lippencott, Phila" housed in an archival sleeve and attached with blue painter's tape, en verso of frame. Black ink inscription with additional artist's signature, en verso of frame. Housed in a black wooden frame with paper title placard, lower center, and paper label reading "195", lower left of frame. Sight – 24" H x 18" W. Framed – 25 3/4" H x 19 3/4" W. Early 20th century. CONDITION: Overall good condition. 3 areas of paper accretions in upper half of work; 6" horizontal line at figure's waist, 5" vertical line in top left, and 1/2" spot top right. Not examined outside of frame.
