Chippendale parcel-gilt Trumeau looking glass, also called an overmantel mirror, flat giltwood cornice over a painted oil on canvas top section depicting a seascape with ships on choppy waters and a mirrored section below; mahogany frame with giltwood serpentine rabbet edges and gilt molded exterior edges, gilt carved grape and vine and scrollwork decoration to the sides. Painting measures 17" H x 31 1/4" W. Mirror measures 17 1/2" H x 31 1/4" W. Overall – 43 1/4" H x 41" W. English, late 18th century. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. CONDITION: Some silvering to glass. Some minor age cracks to wood and scattered restorations. Note on back states the piece was cleaned and restored in 1975.
