James Daugherty (North Carolina/New York, 1889-1974) charcoal and pastel on paper study of a nude female. Signed with personal inscription lower right, "To Morg from his old friend Jimmie Daugherty". Unframed. 22" H x 18" W. Note: Daugherty, one of the early American modernist artists, is known for his Synchronist paintings but also worked as an author and illustrator. His works are in numerous museum collections including the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.
PROVENANCE: By descent from the estate of Tennessee illustration artist Morgan Steinmetz.
CONDITION: Scattered small abrasions to paper, the most significant area being a cluster of surface losses (not holes) to the charcoal, pastel, and paper surface on the subject's right upper thigh and in the black background, and to the upper right corner. A couple of minor edge tears. Overall toning. Some scattered tiny light stains, notably to lower right corner at and near inscription area. Scattered minor creases. Possible old adhesive spots to each upper corner en verso.
