Two (2) Xanthus Russell Smith (Pennsylvania, 1839-1929) marine watercolor paintings on paper. 1st item: Watercolor painting of a three-masted clipper ship that follows a small steamer, with rising or setting sun at left. Sheet affixed to paper mount initialed, dated, and inscribed “An Emmigrant Ship outward bound / from Liverpool” to lower margin. Sheet: 2 in. H x 3 5/16 in. W. Sight (with mount): 2 13/16 in. H x 3 5/8 in. W. 2nd item: Watercolor painting of an illuminated stone lighthouse surrounded by rough seas. Initialed and dated to lower left. Sight: 4 3/8 in. H x 2 3/4 in. W. Both housed together in an ornate giltwood frame with teal mat. Framed: 14 in. H x 17 in. W. Both 1851.
PROVENANCE: Collection of Patricia and Paul DeHaan, Kalamazoo, Michigan.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Item 2 with “J[illegible]” inscription scratched out and replaced with “May,” written in pencil, likely by the artist. Not examined out of frame.
