Two (2) American crazy quilt textiles. 1st item: Hand-pieced crazy quilt top with 19" square blocks made from a variety of satin, silk, and challis fabrics including solids and prints, some with printed portraits, one piece hand-painted, and some with embroidery including the name "Emma", a flag, paisleys, flowers, and crosses. With pearl cotton embroidered borders throughout. 67" x 67". 2nd item: Crazy quilt with center medallion made from satin and silk solid fabrics, hand-pieced to a foundation, some with hand-painted imagery including a blue bird, flowers, and a landscape. Signed "E B" to center block, and embroidered center piece reading "We Hope that Restful Comfort Lingers Under the Work of Loving Fingers". With pearl cotton decorated embroidered borders throughout having fans, scissors, and leaf motifs. Knife edge bound on all four sides to a maroon velvet backing, not quilted or tied. 75" H x 70" W. Both items early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: Private West Tennessee Collection.
CONDITION: 1st item: Weakening to a few fabrics and fraying to edges, but overall in very good condition. 2nd item: Some weakening to a few fabrics, especially in areas of painted imagery, obscuring the images. Some staining to the edges of the quilt top. Otherwise in very good condition.
