Two (2) Danish School oil on canvas pastoral landscape paintings by Gertrud Boberg and Axel Hansen. 1st item: Gertrud Boberg (Denmark, 1907-1997) painting of farm scene depicting a man plowing lead by two horses in the foreground, with rolling rural landscape and workers in the background. The painting is rendered in a post-impressionistic style with loose, rounded brushstrokes. Signed and dated "GB, 1930" lower left. Inscribed "Gertrud Boberg" and "MMOTSNP" on stretcher in verso. Housed in a giltwood frame with ornate decoration in the corners. Sight: 13 3/4" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed: 19" H x 28 1/2" W. 2nd item: Axel Hansen (Denmark, 1896-1936) painting depicting a male figure in a gray hat and vest driving a horse drawn wood cart full of hay past a three-slat, wooden fence along a dirt path beneath the midday sun. Two cows grazing in the field, a tall tree, and a large farmhouse with the red roof of a distant building visible to the right depicted in the background. Signed "Axel Hansen" lower right quadrant. Dated in pencil "1929" along with German printed framer's label, en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with ebonized rabbet. Sight: 19 1/4" H x 27 1/4" W. Framed: 28 1/8" H x 36 1/8" W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall heavy craquelure and grime. 2nd item: Overall good condition with scattered errant paint. Frame with scattered errant paint and spots of wear to gilt.
