Two (2) American crazy quilts, circa 1910. 1st item: Hand-pieced and hand-tied crazy quilt with embroidered motifs including gloves, butterflies, scissors, starts, flowers, and feathers, made from a variety of fabrics including challis, solid wool, wool plaids, velvets, and upholstery braid. Tied with pearl cotton, back to front bound with an embroidered hem, and pink backing. 83" H x 73" W. 2nd item: Hand pieced and minimally quilted crazy quilt with embroidered imagery including a spider web, daisy, insects, and a snake, made from challis, velvet, wool solid and plaid fabrics and pearl cotton embroidery thread. Embroidery covers the seams and joins the quilt through the fabric. Back to front binding, machine applied, with a maroon dyed fabric backing. 75" H x 61" W.
PROVENANCE: Private West Tennessee Collection.
CONDITION: 1st item: embroidery is loose in some areas. Scattered small holes and some degradation to black solid fabrics. Overall grime to front and back. 2nd item: Overall good condition with vibrant colors, a few small holes, and areas where dye has migrated, some fraying on all four sides.
