Hablot Knight "Phiz" Browne (England, 1815-1882) oil on canvas painting, titled "And Serves Him Right", depicting a woman in a blue dress putting a blindfolded Cupid in an icebox that is being held open by a young boy. Cupid's quiver, bow, and arrows lie strewn on the floor in the foreground while a door and shelves filled with containers of multiple sizes and styles are in the background. Titled, signed HKB, and dated "64", en verso of stretcher. Informational paper label in a plastic sleeve affixed en verso of frame. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with cabochon flourish corners and center ornaments having placard with title, artist's name, nickname, origin, and incorrect birthdate affixed to lower sight edge. Sight 11 5/8" H x 9 1/2" W. Framed: 17" H x 15" W.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with minor craquelure throughout.
