Yngve Edward Soderberg (Connecticut/Illinois, 1896-1971) watercolor harbor scene painting — likely set in Mystic, Connecticut — with two wooden buildings at right and two small boats anchored just offshore. Text written on the door of one building reads “MAT” and four dinghies float in the water at lower left. Signed lower right. Housed in a silvered and painted wooden frame with cream mat. Sight: 15 in H x 19 1/2 in W. Frame: 21 1/2 in H x 26 1/4 in W. Biographical Note: Born in Chicago, artist and illustrator Yngve Soderberg studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and, later, at The Art Students League in New York. He established himself as an etcher in Mystic, Connecticut and before long began to frequently create watercolor paintings as well. He worked for the WPA during the depression years and taught art at New London High School for 17 years, beginning in 1950. Soderberg was also President of the Mystic Art Association, now the Mystic Museum of Art, from 1951-1952. (Adapted from “Soderberg Unfurled!,” Mystic Museum of Art)
CONDITION: Overall very good condition, with fresh colors and no apparent toning to exposed areas of sheet. Not examined out of frame. Frame with negligible abrasions.
