Johann Anton Zitterer (Austria, 1761-1840) oil on canvas half-length portrait of a gentleman, possibly a government official, identified as Johann Georg Regenhart, with powdered hair or wig, dark jacket, and blue and gold vest or undershirt. He holds in his elevated left hand a letter inscribed "Ex Officio 1786." Signed and inscribed "Joh. Georg Regenhart / gebohren den 13 Febr: 1736 / gemahleren Ao 1786 im 9ber / v. J.A. Zitterer" "(Joh. George Regenhart / born Feb. 13, 1736 / painted September 1786 / by J.A. Zitterer), lower right. With illegible stamp en verso. Housed in a giltwood frame with oval window. Canvas: 28 1/4 x 21 3/4" W. Sight: 27 1/2" x 20" W. Framed: 35 1/2" H x 28 1/4" W. Biographical note: Johann Anton Zitterer or Ziterer was born in 1761 and died in 1840, in Vienna. Zitterer is best known for his aristocratic portraiture, especially his portraits of the Holy Roman Emperors Joseph II and Francis II and of the composer Joseph Haydn.
CONDITION: Overall good condition within sight window. With scattered retouching throughout, especially to upper right arm, 3 1/2" x 2 1/4", and left forearm, 4 1/4" x 4". See U/V photography. With frame abrasions and minor losses outside of sight window, especially upper right and lower left corners, and fine craquelure throughout. Frame with shrinkage cracks to wood.
