Axel Soeborg (Denmark, 1872-1939) oil on canvas self portrait painting depicting the artist illuminated by candle light holding his painter's palette with a candle resting upon it and two brushes. The artist is dressed in a brown jacket and hat with a canvas visible to the right background. Signed and dated lower right, "A. 27". Housed in a molded giltwood frame. Old paper labels, en verso of stretcher, "No. 66" and "5-1927 Axel Soesborg for Arbejder (illegible)", stamped "43". Printout of artist's information in Danish taped, en verso of stretcher. Sight: 14 1/4" H x 16 5/8" W. Frame: 19 3/8" H x 21 7/8" W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Thomas Bechtel, Memphis, TN.
CONDITION: Canvas has been relined; edges of lining canvas apparent in frame. A portion of original canvas lifting from lining canvas along left border, measuring 2 3/4" L. Very minor craquelure. Frame with minor losses to gilt, largest measuring 1/4" H x 1/8" W along with minor dent to lower outer edge, measuring 3/8" H x 5/8" W.
