Two (2) oil on board landscape paintings. attributed to Jules Desire Lubin (France, b. 1854) or Jean Lubin (French, 19th c.). 1st item: Oil on board painting depicting two figures on a rural road with a village in the background. Inscribed lower right: "a l'ami J. Camille Chaigneau. J Lubin, 1895". Housed in a carved, giltwood frame. Sight: 7 1/4" H x 10" W. Framed: 14" H x 16 1/2" W. 2nd item: Oil on board painting depicting two figures in a heavily wooded landscape, walking across a bridge and pausing to peer over the side. Signed "Jean Lubin, A. 1875" lower right. Housed in a carved, giltwood frame with bead course and egg and dart decoration. Sight: 21" H x 14 1/4" W. Framed: 30 1/2" H x 23 3/4" W. Note: These paintings were a gift from the artist Jean or Jules Lubin to his friend, the French writer and mysticist Mr. J. Camille Chaigneau. They descended to Chaigneau's granddaughter, Vicki Rideaux Meche.
PROVENANCE: The collection of Dr. Andrew Wilkerson, by descent from the estate of Vernon and Vicki Meche, Iron City, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall good condition with some abrasion to perimeter. Signature/Inscription possibly added later. 2nd item: Craquelure and light inpainting throughout including one significant area above bridge on right hand side, approximately 1". Painting has been relined. Signature possibly added later.
