Carved, painted and giltwood eagle with spread wings, gilded cocked head and upper wings, its feet clutching a painted spear with gilt carved feathers and tip, supporting a length of decorative gold fabric. 84" x 22". Probably French, 19th century. Provenance: Estate of A. Welling LaGrone, Jr., Nashville, Tenn. Purchased from O.F. Wilson Ltd., Grosvenor House Antiques Fair 1998. Published in Art and Antiques January 1999 article on LaGrone home, p. 84. Condition: Chips and separations to bottoms of claws, some of original gilding re-burnished with some new gold leaf added, dark green paint on body and spear retouched.
