English School, 19th century oil on canvas painting after "A Little Girl" or "The Age of Innocence" by Sir Joshua Reynolds (United Kingdom, 1723-1792) now in the Tate Gallery, London. The subject, a young barefoot female child is depicted seated in a landscape setting with her legs tucked beneath her, and dressed in a white dress with a pink sash and a pink ribbon with a bow in her hair. Unsigned. Stamp en verso reading "George Rowney & Co, 52 Rathbone Place & 29 Oxford St, W1 London". Housed in a pierced giltwood frame with palmette carved sight edge and foliate carved outer edge. Sight: 14 1/4" H x 11 3/4" W. Frame: 20" H x 17 1/4" W. 19th century. Note: Formerly sold on March 2, 2002 by Christie's of London, Lot 502.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of David B. Person, Holly Springs, Mississippi.
CONDITION: Overall surface grime and craquelure. Abrasions to paint edges, particularly the left edge. Losses to paint layer above figure's head, largest measuring 3/8" H x 3/8" W. Evidence of inpainting or restoration under UV inspection, particularly in the upper background and figure's hair. Previous repair evident en verso of canvas. Frame with significant losses to gilt and carving, largest measuring 1 1/2" H x 5 1/4" W.
