An Italian provincial relief carved walnut cassone or wedding chest, casket form rectangular top with dentil molding, central carved coat of arms flanked by carved panels, female figural carved busts applied to the chest corners, resting on a carved renaissance style base molding, and two front paw feet. 28" H x 71" W x 24 1/2" D. 17th century with later added elements.
PROVENANCE: Deaccessioned by the Vanderbilt University Museum of Art to benefit the acquisitions fund.
CONDITION: The chest consists of 17th-century and later-period elements. Horizontal shrinkage cracks and losses to the center of the top. Losses and repairs to both rear feet that are later replacements. Top hinges are replacements and repairs to the inside top from prior hinges. Base bottom with horizontal wood shrinkage. Wear and losses to case upper back corners.
