Follower of John Hoppner (English, 1758-1810) oil on canvas three-quarter length portrait of a a middle-aged man with white hair, dressed in a white cravat and a high-collared black coat against a dark brown background. Unsigned. Housed in a molded giltwood frame with foliate and scroll decorations. Sight: 22 7/8" H x 19 3/8" W. Frame: 35 1/8" H x 31 1/2" W. English, early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of David B. Person, Holly Springs, Mississippi.
CONDITION: Overall craquelure, minor scattered exfoliation, scattered spots of blooming varnish. Minor areas of inpainting evident under UV inspection along the subject's left cheek, to the left of the mouth, and in the background by the subject's right ear. Frame with significant losses to molding and gilt, largest measuring 2 3/8" H x 2 3/4" W.
