Italian or Flemish School, 18th century or earlier, sanguine chalk drawing on laid paper depicting the marble sculpture of Longinus by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, located in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City (completed in 1638). Signed upper left Daret or Dozet. Float mounted under glass with black background and mat, in a giltwood molded frame. Sheet – 10 1/2"h x 8 1/4"W. Frame – 16 1/2'H x 14"W. Note: Longinus is said to be the blind Roman soldier who pierced Christ in the side with a spear during His crucifixion. He converted to Christianity after realizing Jesus was the son of God, and regained his sight. Bernini's sculpture captures the moment of his spiritual awakening and the restoration of his vision.
