A large Japanese Zushi lacquered, polychrome and gilt carved wooden Buddha altar shrine. Comprised of three parts including the seated Buddha holding a lotus flower in his left hand atop a lotus base, the curved and arched halo with carved scrollwork, and a hexagonal four tiered base with garden wall, bird, pierced floral plaques, and wave motifs. All mounted onto a shaped black lacquer base with applied bronze plaques. 18 1/2" H x 10 1/4" W. Late 19th century/early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Cincinnati, Ohio estate.
CONDITION: Overall good condition, minor scattered losses to gilt and polychrome. Buddha crown with losses, halo and buddha figure with craquelure, base with loss to one adornment, black lacquer bases with losses to decoration. A couple of areas of clean repaired breaks to applied elements.
