Patricia Mertig Sprouls (American, 1921-2011) watercolor, pen, and ink illustration painting titled "Crockett's Tavern c. 1790" depicting several people and animals engaged in various activities before the tavern that John Crockett, father of American folk hero David "Davy" Crockett, established in 1794, in Morristown, Tennessee. Signed "Patricia M. Sprouls" with copyright symbol, lower left, and titled, lower right. Knoxville Watercolor Society label with title and artist's information, en verso. Housed and matted under plexiglass in a giltwood frame. Sight: 18 1/2" H x 24 1/4" W. Framed: 26" H x 32" W. Also includes an Artist's Proof color offset lithograph depicting the same image, signed in pencil "Patricia M Sprouls", lower right. Shrinkwrapped together with a typed information sheet about the artist and the print with a piece of cardboard backing. 17 1/2" H x 22 1/2" W. Biography (Courtesy of the Knoxville News Sentinel): Patricia was born in the Bronx, New York City and moved to the Isle of Capri with her mother and sister at the age of eight. She began her lifetime fine art career under tutelage of her mother and won a four-year full scholarship to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Naples Italy where she was awarded "Best Foreign Art Student" of all Italy. Returning to the U.S. in 1947 and marrying in 1948 she raised her family and continued her art career. She exhibited in New Jersey and New York City. She became president of the NJ chapter of the American Artists Professional League, a member of the board of the national organization and also a member of the board of the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. Sprouls moved to Norris, TN in 1987 where she continued her art with the local art groups, winning "Best in Show" one year in the Dogwood Art Festival.
CONDITION: Both items in overall good condition. Painting with scattered foxing spots to mat. Prints with scattered foxing spots, primarily to edges of sheet. Not examined outside of frame or shrinkwrap.
