Two (2) American school, 19th century, portrait paintings. 1st item: Oil on canvas painting depicting a woman with dark hair attired in a black dress and white bonnet with pink roses. Depicting standing with folded hands, one wearing a wedding ring and the other holding a book, against a plain background with red drapery. Unsigned. Housed in a contemporary giltwood frame. Sight: 11" H x 9 1/4" W. Framed: 15" H x 13 1/4" W. 2nd item: Folk Art pastel on paper portrait of a young boy in Revolutionary War era clothing with tri-corner hat, carrying an American flag over his shoulder and a sword in his right hand, against a black background. Unsigned. Housed under glass in a giltwood frame. Sight: 23 1/2" H x 18" W. Framed: 25 1/2" H x 20" W. Circa 1876.
PROVENANCE: Estate of Judge John Nixon, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall heavy craquelure. Inpainting in a few areas, visible under UV light inspection; largest area, approximately 1", not affecting central subject matter. Some paint losses and one hole above subject's right shoulder. Painting has been relined. Frame in overall good condition. 2nd item: Scattered losses to paper with significant loss to left side and lower-left corner; some discoloration to paper. Frame with discoloration and wear with some loss to gilt, largest measuring 1" H x 3/8" W.
