American or European school, first half 19th century oil on canvas bust-length painting depicting a clergyman with receding white hair, attired in black with a white collar, against a plain background. Unsigned. Housed in a giltwood and gesso frame with foliate scroll decoration. Sight: 24" W x 29" H. Framed: 30 1/4" W x 35" H.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Raymond White, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall good condition, lined, with some craquelure. Some flea bite paint loss, largest 1/4" above sitter's right shoulder. Abrasion around perimeter, and some light inpainting to left and right hand side of sitter upper right margin of background visible under UV light inspection. Some restoration to lower area of subject clothing. Frame with losses to molding and overall wear.
