American school bust-length oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman attired in a brown coat, with a white tie, and seated in a red chair against a plain background. Unsigned. Illegible stencil en verso. Housed in a period gilt and gesso frame. Sight: 29 1/4" H x 24 1/2" W. Framed: 36" H x 31" W. Early 19th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Overall heavy craquelure. Some flaking to paint in background, above sitter, and in lower margin largest area 3/4", upper left quadrant. Two holes, largest approximately 1". No inpainting under UV light inspection, painting has not been relined. Frame with heavy wear expected with age.
