James MacDonald Barnsley (Canadian, 1869-1921) oil on canvas nocturnal landscape painting depicting a crescent moon rising over a small sun obscured by dusky clouds, with trees lining the horizon and a small body of water reflecting the light, foreground. Signed lower left "J. M. Barnsley". Additionally signed "J. M. Barnsley" to one stretcher. Unframed. 18 1/4"H x 30"W. Provenance: Private Kentucky collection. Biography (Adapted from AskArt): A native of Canada, Barnsley studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts in Missouri between 1879 and 1882. He subsequently went to Paris, where he lived for five years winning many prizes for his works. Afterwards, Barnsley returned to Canada and in 1892, he suffered a schizophrenic breakdown that ended his painting career.
CONDITION: Craquelure throughout, including impact crackle upper left quadrant; two tears measuring under 1/4" upper left, a few scattered flakes up to 1/4", general grime.
