1st item: Mitsui Atsuo (Japan, 1900-2000) shin hanga color woodblock print, “Kawarasaki Gonjuro,” 1957, possibly a later printing. The actor Kawarasaki Gonjuro III holds an inro, with passages of embossing throughout. From the series Figures on the Stage (Butai sugata). Housed in a decorative window mat. Sight: 13 1/2 in. W. 2nd item: Unknown artist, possibly Kitagawa Fujimaro (Japan, 1790-1850) or after Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japan, 1797-1861) bijin-ga color woodblock print that depicts a woman in a snowy landscape, with a body of water and village beyond, early 20th century. Housed under glass in a silvered wood frame with black textile mat. Sight: 11 3/4 in. H x 7 5/8 in. W. Framed: 17 1/8 in. H x 12 7/8 in. W. 3rd-4th items: Two (2) framed facsimiles of early Japanese woodblock prints: “A Hawk on a Cliff near a Kiri Tree,” after Torii Kiyomasu I (Japan, fl. 1704-18), c. 1718, and “The Insistent Lover,” Sugimura Jihei (Japan, fl. 1681-1698), c. 1684/98, from an untitled series of erotic prints. Both from the 1955 portfolio “12 Woodcuts, The Clarence Buckingham Collection of Japanese Prints,” issued to accompany Helen Gunsaulus, THE CLARENCE BUCKINGHAM COLLECTION OF JAPANESE PRINTS (Chicago: The Art Institute of Chicago, 1955), itself published in a limited edition of 500 copies. CONDITION: Item 1 laid to card, with window mat affixed over margins. Otherwise very good condition, evenly inked with vivid colors. 2nd item with minor soiling to sheet. Items 3-4 in overall very good condition. Not examined out of frames. Frame with minor abrasions and losses.
