Two (2) watercolor paintings by Frederick Knecht Detwiller (New York/Maine, 1882-1953). 1st item: Watercolor on paper titled "Wash Alley, Charleston SC", depicting an alleyway between rowhouses, with multiple figures going about their daily work. Laundry hangs from clotheslines overhead. Partially obscured signature "Detwiller" lower left. Housed and matted under glass in a wooden frame. Three handwritten labels with title and numbering as well as artist's printed atelier label, en verso. Sight: 19 1/8" H x 13" W. Frame: 25 5/8" H x 19 1/2" W. 2nd item: Watercolor on paper wharf scene, rendered in a grisaille palette, depicting one fishing boat docked at a raised pier, with figures pulling a net from the boat onto the pier as another boat departs, with a larger sailing boat moored nearby. Signed "F K Detwiller" lower right. Housed and matted under glass in a wooden frame. Sight: 11 7/8" H x 17 7/8" W. Frame: 18 5/8" H x 23 5/8" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall good condition. Paper slightly displaced under matte; not examined outside of frame. 2nd item: Overall good condition, light toning, not examined out of frame.
