Jessie B. Gorby (Kentucky, active second quarter 20th century) oil on board painting, titled "The Broom Seller" or "Kentucky Spring", depicting a middle-aged man wearing a gray suit and hat, seated on a wooden ledge with vertical planks with his hands in his lap, and holding two brooms. Titled in black "The Broom Seller" lower left. Old J. B. Speed Memorial Museum (now The Speed Art Museum) label with artist name, address of Hayswood Sanatorium (open 1925-1983 in Maysville, KY), additional title "Kentucky Spring", and medium information affixed, en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood frame. Sight: 19 1/2" H x 15 3/8" W. Frame: 22 5/8" H x 18 1/2" W. Circa 1940.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Scattered exfoliation of the paint surface and abrasion to paint on subject's right knee measuring 2" L. Frame with minor scattered wear to gilt.
