George Ayers Cress (American/Tennessee, 1921-2008) works on paper, including eight (8) sketchbooks containing a total of thirty-one (31) drawings, and eighteen (18) drawings on loose sheets. All rendered in charcoal, ink, and watercolor, depicting an assortment of landscapes and figures. Landscapes include locations in Siena and Florence, Italy, dated 1973-78; and Mendocino California, dated 1989; Monhegan Island in Maine, 1974-1987; England, 1976; Pawleys Island, South Carolina 1977. Some sketches notated. All sketches with museum accession numbers in pencil en verso. All pieces ranging in size from 3 1/2" H x 6" W to 14" H x 11" W.
PROVENANCE: Property of the Hunter Museum of American Art.
CONDITION: Overall good condition with light wear to covers. Light toning, foxing to some pieces. Scattered minor creases to some edges. One sketchbook with minor stain to two pages. Slight waviness to paper in Monhegan sketchbook.
