Ora Coltman (Ohio, 1858-1940) oil on board coastal landscape painting depicting a setting sun reflected in a body of water, with cloud-streaked sky overhead. Signed "Ora Coltman" lower right. Housed in a period giltwood leaf-molded frame. Sight: 14" H x 11" W. Frame: 17 1/2" H x 14" W. Biography: Noted Ohio artist Ora Coltman was an influential member of the regionalist Cleveland School and helped found the Water Color Society of Cleveland. He studied with Carroll Beckwith at the Art Students League in New York and in Paris under Jean Paul Laurens. He summered frequently in Zoar and in Provincetown, MA (where this scene may have been painted). Source: the Butler Institute of American Art.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Grime; several scattered tiny inclusions; two 1 1/2" scratches right center, 2" scratch or crack near center. Painting does not quite fill the frame opening (paint extends into the gap). Frame has wear and a 2" area of loss to upper left edge.
