5 George Cress (Alabama/Tennessee, 1921-2008) paintings. 1st item: Oil on canvas painting of cows near railroad tracks grazing. Signed lower right: "Geo A. Cress". Unframed and unmounted, tacked onto foam-core board for support. Canvas: 12" H x 16 1/4" W. 2nd-5th items: Four (4) watercolor paintings on paper depicting various American landscape scenes, rendered in black ink and dark wash. Includes one titled "Vermont Barn" lower left, dated 1988, and another depicting farm with haystacks dated '42. Both are signed and dated lower right; two others are unsigned. All with museum accession numbers to lower right corners en verso. All unframed. Two affixed to board, one matted. Images ranging 9" H x 11 3/8" W to 10" H x 15 1/2" W. Overall ranging: 11 3/4" H x 8" W to 15 1/4" H x 17 3/8" W. Biography: George Cress was born in Anniston, Alabama and studied at Emory University, American University, and the University of Georgia, where he studied under fellow Southern contemporary artist Lamar Dodd. He was a central figure in Chattanooga's arts community and served as President of the Tennessee Arts Council. He sat on the board of the Hunter Museum of Art. From 1951-1984 he was painter in residence at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. PROVENANCE: Property of the Hunter Museum of American Art.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Each unframed and unmounted. 1st item: corners tacked onto foam-core board for support. Two pin holes to each of the upper corners. Some paint loss to lower right quadrant at the edge mainly near the cow head. Light canvas rippling mainly to lower right edge. 2nd-5th items: Most with light to moderate toning throughout. One with tape to edges, light foxing, and uneven toning to borders due to previous mat.
