Large 19th century full-length oil on canvas portrait painting of a child standing beside a rose bush with one hand extended as if to pluck a blossom; the child holds a sprig of flowers in the other hand and wears a white bonnet adorned with large blue flower and red shoes with blue ribbons. Unsigned. Housed in a likely original ornate giltwood frame with ovolo, gadroon, and foliate moldings and carved corner brackets. Sight: 39 1/2" H x 32" W. Framed: 51" H x 44" W. American or Continental, second quarter 19th century. Note: by oral history, this painting was purchased from the Kentucky Castle collection in Versailles, Kentucky.
PROVENANCE: Private Illinois Collection.
CONDITION: UV light examination shows revarnishing touchup painting to subject's forehead, jaw, chest and forearms. 3" patch lower right quadrant, in background; 6" patch lower left quadrant, in flowers. Craquelure throughout. Restoration and regilding to antique frame.
