English sterling silver cake basket with reeded handle, gadrooned border, shell and floral corners, and a footed base. Engraved coat of arms to center featuring three crabs below an eagle and the motto "Mutare Vel Timere Sperno" (Change Or Afraid to Scorn) to the bowl and engraved crest to handle. The coat of arms is believed to be that of Thomas or Elizabeth Bythesea or Edward Horlock Mortimer, all of Wiltshire, England. Basket with hallmarked for London, date letter for 1812. Maker's mark not found. Measures 3 3/4" H x 11 5/8" W x 10 1/2" D. 30.2 troy ounces.
PROVENANCE: Private Chattanooga, TN collection.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with some minor pitting and light scratching noted to bowl.
