Two (2) Animal Portraits, including Louis Braun Oil of Horse and Charcoal of Dog. 1st item: Attributed to Louis (Ludwig) Braun (German, 1836-1916), oil on board study of the head of a horse. Pen inscription en verso of painting reads "Louis Braun Munchen 1900." Later giltwood carved frame. 7 1/2" H x 9 1/2" W sight, 15" H x 17" W framed. Note: Louis Braun, also known as Ludwig Braun, was a history/military painter said to have studied with Horace Vernet in Paris before establishing himself in Munich. 2nd item: Pastel on paper dog portrait depicting the head of a Great Dane. Signed and dated Sofel 1941 lower right corner. 15" H x 11" W sight, 18 1/2" H x 14 1/2" W in ripple carved wood frame. Provenance: private Nashville, TN Collection, by descent from the estates of Edith and Richard Mickenhagen, Munich, Germany and San Paolo, Brazil. CONDITION: 1st item: 3 short scratches with tiny specks of paint loss (up to 1/4"L) in bridle and mane areas. 2 " scratch with no paint loss below ear (horizontal). 1/2" diameter u shaped scratch at right edge. Scattered other minor scratches and inclusions. Fine cracquelure to board. 2nd item: Scattered smudges, toning to paper.
